Google Kraków Open House 2014

In the evening of the last Thursday (2nd October 2014) I was attending Google Kraków Open House 2014, which took place in the office very close to Main Marlet Square, where Googlers (Google’s employees) work.

Although there were about 40-60 people invited, there was a selection before the event, so I was very happy that I succeed ;)

I went to Google’s office to get some information about Google’s technologies: Dart language, AngularJS and Workshop of the Chrome Experiments.
I had some experience related to these technologies, so I was not total newbie.

For those, who have never heard about Dart I would like to say, that it is JavaScript replacement/successor designed by Google.

I also wanted to learn something about working for Google.

Event took place between 5:30 PM and 9:30 PM.

I started with some introduction, which could be summarized as welcome presentation.

After this there was a tech talk about Machine learning:

  • where we could use it: e.g. for SPAM classification,
  • machine learning models,
  • basic mathematical background (which was heavy).

Next presentation was about Google Cloud. Technology seems to be good, but presentation was average.

Next thing was Discussion Panel (Questions and Answers), when we could ask Googlers almost about everything. If you hadn’t been chosen to ask it in public… you could ask about it later… in the next part of the event.

Last part of time was devoted for Networking with Googlers, Bites and Flavors. During this time I met three Googlers: Software Engineer from Germany, recruiter from United Kingdom (who provided me good resource about Dart) and Software Developer from Poland.

There was also very good food, drinks and wine :)

It was very good time and I had very good conversations. Googlers are normal people, just like us, but they work harder and for different projects (used by millions people).

I got something more about Dart. Google uses it in AngularDart and it is quite mature technology. I know that no company want to use/support it (Mozilla/Microsoft), but Google, but things will change. The main advantage of Dart is that it can be converted into JavaScript (dart2js).

So if you want to work at Google – you should learn Dart, but Google use also C++/Java/Python/etc.

You must remember following things: code must be testable, efficient and of course passing compilation (correct).

1001 form inputs in PHP and 1001 items inside IN operator in Oracle database

Thousand number was a magical for many people among the ages. In Latin it was described by M letter (lac. Millennium).

In 2000 year we had experienced year 2 kilo bug (Y2K bug) also called Millennium bug caused by dating convention made many years earlier by describing year with two digits instead of four e.g. 1992 was described as 92. Year 2000 could be described in this system as 00, and current year 2014 as 14. But what with financial or population systems? Somebody could be born in both 1901 and 2001. Because of this problem whole world was updating the software.

But attentive reader could ask about the relation between number 2000 and current time, because the problem described above had passed and had been solved long time ago. After all, we have 2014.

[PL] Problem tysiąca i jednej kontrolki

Once again, Polish Programmers are on the top

Today I would like to share a good news about Polish Programmers, who won the World Cup called “Hello World Open” located in Helsinki (Finland).

Among over 2 500 programmers from 90 countries, our team from Poznań (named Need For C) was the best.

It is not a big surprise that one of this great team member works for Google Poland :)

Polish team was better than Brazilian, Finnish, Russian, etc.

Review of the book: Zend Framework 2 Cookbook written by Josephus Callaars, issued by Packt Publishing.

There is many cookery books although I haven’t seen yet any about Zend Framework 2.
No matter how you name the book, title is just a title and every book have to stand out of the competitions. Otherwise is will be just one of the many cookbooks…

 Zend Framework 2 Cookbook

To be honest – there is no too much books about Zend Framework 2, so writing such book is worth fighting for.

The typical cookery book contains many recipes, provided with nice looking pictures and hints about how to make some dish or meal. Cookbooks teach people by practice and repetition till we reach perfection.

We won’t become good cook-progammer in 24 hours, which is quite often used in the books related to Computer Science, trying to convince us that it is possible.

Did the author rised to the occasion?

I will try to answer for that question in this review.

[PL] Recenzja książki Zend Framework 2 Application Development, wydawnictwa Packt Publishing

Recenzja książki Zend Framework 2 Application Development from Packt Publishing

Zend Framework 2 Application Development

Jeśli szukasz takiej właśnie książki to zachęcam do lektury innej pozycji, a wiem, że takowa istnieje, bo taką książkę miałem okazję przeczytać przed tą pozycją. Wystarczy trochę wysiłku by ją zidentyfikować (jej autor jest pochodzenia niemieckiego).

Review of the book: Zend Framework 2 Application Development from Packt Publishing, written by Christopher Valles.

Zend Framework 2 Application Development

At the beginning of this review I would like to say that it is my second book about Zend Framework 2. This gives me a bigger picture and I could compare this book with the previous one.

What I should say first is to that this is not a reference book. If you are looking for the one, which describes Zend Framework 2 in details, covering many components and new things in second version of the framework – I would recommend to find another book and read it. I was hopefully a reader of such book – it was the first book I read about ZF2.
Although the author wrote in the book that he covers over 90% components of the framework – I revised it and in my opinion it is just a misunderstanding.

CSS and JavaScript files order in Zend Framework templates

Today I would like to focus on one thing in Zend Framework (no matter if I talk about version 1.x or 2.x).

There is a problem with positioning CSS and JavaScript files in templates (using headLink() and headScript() helpers). I will demonstrate it in below samples and give the solution for that situation.

So let’s begin!

SubForms example in Zend Framework 1.x

Today I would like to write something about SubForms available in Zend Framework 1.x.
Currently we have Zend Framework 2 released, and there is some similar solution called Form Collections with completely new approach.

I will take care that new feature from Zend Framework 2 in the close future, but in this article I would like to share some good looking and good working example of using SubForms from Zend Framework 1.x

SubForm example page in HTML5

Currently I am working on the project made with Zend Framework 1.x and I think that real example could be useful to people, who want to learn something about Zend_Form_SubForm.

Unit testing in Zend Framework 2

Today I would like to focus on the unit testing in applications made with Zend Framework 2 and Doctrine 2 ORM. Sample unit tests were included with Zend Framework 1.x and they are also attached to Zend Framework 2 Tutorial.

Important is, that we have two approaches of testing controllers for the latest version of the framework:

  • first, based on class PHPUnit_Framework_TestCase,
  • and the second, which uses AbstractHttpControllerTestCase class.
